Now No Excuse To Do Homework!

Goodbye, 2005. And goodbye to the Kids WB weekday afternoon lineup, whose passing marks the end of something more than just watching Pokemon after school. Saturday airings are not affected.

KidsWBUsing Fox Kids as a template, a competing afternoon block was added to the WB schedule shortly after that networks launch. Stylish and energetic, the KidsWB block offered such hot competition that Fox finally shutdown its afternoon schedule, leaving the field open to such WB offerings as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!

Now all that is gone, as this is the final week you'll be able to find their kids shows running in the 3-5 p.m. Monday-Friday slot. Starting January 2, 2006, the lineup will be vintage episodes of ER, followed by two back-to-back episodes of 8 Simple Rules. (so sad..)

Fans of Pokemon and The Batman will not be amused, but those with cable in their homes will undoubtedly just tune WB out and look elsewhere for afterschool fun. For children whose parents budgets can't comfortably accommodate cable television, theres nowhere left to turn but the educator-approved afternoon offerings of PBS - YUK!

So say hello to 2006, a brave new TV world as long as you've got the bucks to enjoy it.

Poké-Fi

News reports from our affiliate BMG says Junichi Masuda, the director of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, said in his "Director's Column" feature of the Game Freak Web site Wednesday that he wants the games to allow players to play and communicate internationally via Wi-Fi.Junichi Masuda

He said such a feature has not yet been integrated into the games, but he intends to include it. He confirmed the games are still far from being completed, but they will utilize all of the Nintendo DS's functions, including the touch screen, local wireless, two-screen and Wi-Fi capabilities.

Masuda has previously composed music for the Pokémon games. He has also designed the Hoenn region.

4Pokémon

4Kids Entertainment Inc., which licenses entertainment names and personalities aimed at children, on Friday said it would not renew its license to the Japanese cartoon character Pokemon once it expires at the end of this year. 4Kids Entertainment Inc.

Pokémon USA Inc., a subsidiary of Japan's Pokémon Co., will oversee all Pokemon licensing outside of Asia starting next year, 4Kids said in a statement. The decision to move the licensing activity in-house was a brand management decision, it added.

Full Press Release:
4Kids Entertainment To Transition Its Representation Of Pokémon

NEW YORK (December 23, 2005) - 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: KDE) and Pokémon USA, Inc., announced today that they have agreed not to renew the Pokémon representation agreement set to expire on December 31, 2005. Beginning in 2006, Pokémon USA, Inc.’s in-house licensing group will handle all Pokémon licensing outside of Asia.Pokemon USA

“We felt it was in the best interest of the Pokémon property for Pokémon USA, Inc., to assume all aspects of licensing,” said Akira Chiba, President of Pokémon USA, Inc. “This was a brand management decision. We would like to thank 4Kids for all of its great work over the last eight years in helping to establish Pokémon as one of the leading children’s brands in the world.”

“4Kids has had a successful eight-year exclusive relationship with the Pokémon property that will be expiring at year end,” said Alfred R. Kahn, Chairman and CEO of 4Kids Entertainment. “Over the next month, 4Kids will assist Pokémon USA, Inc., in its transition to in-house representation. We wish Pokémon USA much success going forward.”

Under the terms of the expiring Pokémon USA, Inc. - 4Kids representation agreement, 4Kids will continue to receive commissions for the next several years on payments made under existing Pokémon license agreements whose term expires after December 31, 2005. It is expected that commissions earned by 4Kids from the Pokémon property will decline over the course of the next several years. 4Kids will also continue next year to produce the current eighth season of Pokémon television episodes.

4Kids said it will still receive commissions over the next several years from existing Pokemon license deals that will expire after Dec. 31, 2005, but said commissions from Pokemon are expected to decline over the next several years.

Pokémon, first launched in Japan in 1996 on Nintendo's Game Boy video game console, was introduced in North America in 1998. The character has generated over $25 billion in worldwide retail sales, fueled by playing cards, a television show and other merchandise. 4Kids held the Pokémon license for eight years.

Poké7btb7

If you remember a news story we posted way back in January, and have heard recent rumors about Nintendo and Pokémon USA suing for using Pokémon in the cancer-causing gene name, here is the latest updated information. The name of a cancer-causing gene has been changed from "Pokemon" to "Zbtb7" after Pokémon USA threatened legal action to keep scientists from referring to the gene by the game's name, according to an article in science journal Nature. Science Journal Nature - January 2005 issue

In January's issue, geneticist Pier Paolo Pandolfi of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York describes the cancer-causing POK erythroid myeloid ontogenic gene, calling it Pokémon.

The gene in question is part of the POK gene family that encodes proteins that turn off other genes. POK proteins are critical in embryonic development, cellular differentiation and oncogenesis, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Nonplussed by the rush of headlines like "Pokémon causes cancer," Nintendo subsidiary Pokémon USA threatened legal action against the center to have the name of its popular game and trading-card series disassociated from the gene, the latest issue of Nature reports. The cancer center has complied with Pokemon's demands and now refers to the gene by the much-less-catchy moniker Zbtb7, Nature reports.

Pokémon Trozei

We have the latest news about the new puzzle game, Pokemon Trozei, (Pokémon Torouze in Japan) including the US release date, some info in how to play and some all new screenshots. Pokémon® Trozei for Nintendo DS™ Scheduled to release on March 6, 2006, Pokémon Trozei has players using the touch screen to line up four Pokemon puzzle pieces in a row to make a "Trozei" and clear the pieces. First here is the brief news release from Nintendo USA:

You've got the slide rule, the water slide, the slide projector, the slide guitar and the Electric Slide. But none of them is nearly as fun as the new slide-action puzzle game for Nintendo DS™ called Pokémon® Trozei.

Nintendo systems have always been home to great puzzle games, and the additional abilities of Nintendo DS add a new dimension to game play. Players use the touch screen to slide Pokémon puzzle pieces side to side or up and down. Lining up four in a row (vertically or horizontally) makes a "Trozei" and clears those pieces from the screen. When players create continuous Trozeis by lining up three in a row, then two in a row, they will clear the screen faster and increase their score.

Pokémon Trozei features two single-player modes and two two-player modes. As an extra bonus for Pokémon fans, players also try to add each of the more than 380 Pokémon featured in the game to their Trozei Lists. Pokémon® Trozei launches March 6, 2005.

It also features two single-player modes, two two-player modes, and more than 380 Pokémon. To see all the new info, screenshots and our reviews, go to our Trozei page.
